Creative and Marketing Resumes: Pair Portfolio Links With Performance Metrics

Pair your best work with measurable results, clear case studies, and an application resume that stays readable.

Connect a relevant sample to a defined result and an honest account of your contribution.

A polished portfolio shows what you can create. Your resume needs to explain the problem you solved, your contribution, and the evidence that the work made a difference.

That connection matters whether you design brand systems, write landing pages, manage paid campaigns, improve product interfaces, or run social channels. “Created engaging content” provides little context. A relevant sample paired with a clearly defined outcome gives the reader something concrete to evaluate.

For creative, marketing, and media roles, combine a readable, ATS-friendly resume with direct portfolio links and specific performance evidence. Connect each selected project to your contribution, an appropriate metric, a timeframe, and a case study. Keep important information in normal document text so visual formatting does not interfere with parsing.

This guide covers graphic designers, copywriters, growth marketers, UX/UI designers, and social media managers. You will learn how to use ROAS, conversion rates, engagement lift, retention, and other evidence without overstating what your work achieved.

All sample candidates, campaigns, figures, and resume bullets are fictional teaching examples. They are not client results, industry benchmarks, or promises of hiring success. Replace them with facts you can support.

What Should a Creative or Marketing Resume Prove?

A useful creative resume makes three things clear: the quality of your work, the judgment behind your decisions, and the contribution you made to a relevant outcome.

A portfolio provides room for visuals, writing samples, prototypes, and reasoning. The resume helps the reader decide which of those examples deserve closer attention.

Consider the difference:

Designed social media graphics for product launches.

Compared with:

Designed and versioned 24 launch assets for a paid social test; the winning concept recorded a 1.8% link click-through rate versus 1.2% for the control during a four-week experiment.

The second version supplies scope, context, a comparison, and a timeframe. It still needs a case study explaining who ran the test, whether other variables changed, and how confidently the difference can be interpreted.

You do not need a revenue figure for every project. Match the evidence to the responsibility you actually held.

Pair role-relevant metrics with supporting portfolio work

Use the job description to select your strongest examples. A brand-design vacancy and a performance-creative vacancy may require different evidence from the same portfolio.

Place a visible portfolio URL near your contact details, then connect selected achievements to specific case studies using clear project names. Keep the achievement understandable without requiring the reader or an ATS to visit the link.

The relationship should be easy to follow:

Project → your contribution → measured evidence → matching case study

For example:

Rewrote the pricing-page headline and objection-handling sections for an eight-week controlled test; the variant recorded a 4.5% demo-request rate versus 3.6% for the control. Case study: Pricing Page Messaging.

On the next line, include a short, readable URL to that case study. Use your own domain or your actual portfolio platform address.

Roche’s candidate guidance explains that some systems may retain a hyperlink URL while dropping its linked wording. It recommends displaying the URL itself or linking from a label such as “portfolio,” rather than embedding the link in an important accomplishment or job title. Roche’s resume-parsing FAQ

Practical ways to apply that guidance include:

  • Keep your name, title, dates, and achievement text outside hyperlinks.
  • Display a recognizable portfolio address in normal text.
  • Use the same case-study title on your resume and portfolio.
  • Keep essential evidence in the resume, even when a case study adds detail.
  • Complete the application’s dedicated portfolio field when one is available.

Do not rely on a QR code, a tiny link icon, or a link hidden inside an image as the only route to your work.

Choose a few relevant examples

Two or three carefully selected case studies can give a reader a clearer route through your work than a large, unfiltered gallery.

For a UX role, lead with a project showing research and product decisions. For a copywriting role, prioritize writing that matches the channel and audience. For growth marketing, make the hypothesis, measurement, and subsequent decision easy to find.

Open every linked page while signed out. Check that it works on a phone, loads without a request for access, and has readable text alongside visuals. If a case study requires a password, provide clear access instructions through the employer’s permitted application fields.

Which Performance Metrics Belong on a Creative Resume?

Choose metrics that explain the purpose of the work. A high number has limited value if its definition or relevance is unclear.

Define performance metrics before adding them to your resume
MetricHow to describe it clearlyContext to include
Return on ad spend, or ROASAttributed conversion value divided by ad spendValue definition, channel, spend, reporting period, attribution basis
Conversion rateDefined successful actions divided by the relevant eligible populationConversion action, denominator, baseline, timeframe
Engagement rateDefined interactions divided by a specified exposure or audience measurePlatform, included interactions, denominator, paid or organic
RetentionShare of a defined starting cohort meeting a return or continuation conditionCohort, interval, return event, measurement method
Click-through rate, or CTRDefined clicks divided by impressionsLink clicks versus all clicks, channel, placement, period
Cost per acquisition, or CPAIncluded acquisition cost divided by defined acquisitionsCustomer or lead definition, included costs, period

Treat the formulas above as a starting point. Name the actual report definition you used; platforms and organizations may measure similar labels differently.

ROAS: Explain the value behind the ratio

If a campaign records $48,000 in attributed purchase revenue against $12,000 in ad spend, revenue-based ROAS is 4.0x, or 400%.

Google Ads describes ROAS in terms of conversion value per advertising cost. Conversion values can represent revenue or other assigned business values, so a reported ROAS figure is not automatically a measure of collected sales revenue. Google Ads guidance on Target ROAS

A useful resume example is:

Managed $12,000 in paid search spend during a six-week campaign that recorded $48,000 in platform-attributed purchase revenue and 4.0x ROAS; led query review and landing-page test coordination.

In the case study, identify the reporting source, attribution model or window where available, conversion action, and whether revenue includes refunds or taxes. Distinguish a target ROAS setting from achieved ROAS.

ROAS does not establish profitability. Product costs, fees, creative production, and other expenses may sit outside ad spend. Do not rename ROAS as ROI or describe it as profit.

Conversion rates: Define the denominator

“Improved conversion by 25%” raises several questions. What counted as a conversion? How many people or sessions were eligible? What changed from the baseline?

Suppose a test records a signup rate of 4% for the control and 5% for the variant:

  • The absolute difference is 1 percentage point.
  • The relative increase is 25%.

Writing “increased conversion by 25 percentage points” would be incorrect.

Keep the calculation consistent with the system. Google Analytics defines session key event rate using sessions in which a key event occurred, rather than simply dividing the total count of key events by sessions. Google Analytics metric definitions

In a case study, include variant and control sample sizes, test dates, allocation, the success event, and the result of any statistical analysis. An observed difference alone does not establish a reliable causal improvement.

Engagement lift: State what engagement means

Social engagement rate might use impressions, reach, or followers as the denominator. It might count different combinations of reactions, comments, saves, shares, or clicks.

For an illustrative internal definition, suppose engagement rate equals likes, comments, shares, and saves divided by impressions. A change from 2.0% to 2.6% is a 0.6 percentage-point increase and a 30% relative lift.

Describe the result accordingly:

Developed a 12-post organic education series; campaign engagement rate by impressions was 2.6% versus 2.0% for the previous comparable series, a 30% relative lift.

Explain what made the series comparable. Seasonality, audience changes, paid distribution, and post mix can affect the result. If the comparison was observational, label it that way.

Retention: Name the cohort and the return behavior

Retention needs a defined group and interval. “Improved retention” could mean returning to an app, renewing a subscription, repeating a purchase, or staying subscribed to email.

Google Analytics describes cohort retention using groups of users acquired together and their subsequent return behavior. This is different from a general count of returning users. Google Analytics retention overview

A clear example is:

Designed onboarding changes with product and engineering; day-30 return-event retention was 34% for the August acquisition cohort versus 29% for July, a 5 percentage-point increase in a nonrandomized comparison.

That wording identifies an association. A stronger causal claim would require stronger evidence and a design that supports it.

Graphic Designer Resume Examples: Connect Craft With Function

Graphic design can influence comprehension, consistency, accessibility, production speed, and campaign response. Your resume should explain the objective alongside the visual work.

Before:

Created attractive graphics and maintained brand consistency.

After:

Built a reusable campaign template system for six regional teams; median production time for recurring asset sets fell from five hours to three across 18 tracked requests.

Another example:

Designed three paid social concepts and 18 adaptations for a controlled creative test; the selected concept recorded a 1.8% link CTR versus 1.2% for the control over four weeks.

The case study should show the brief, concepts, channel constraints, and your design decisions. For the production example, explain the timing method and whether asset complexity remained comparable. For the ad example, distinguish your design contribution from media buying, targeting, and offer changes.

For branding work without commercial analytics, use evidence such as the number of adopted templates, rollout scope, accessibility fixes, or documented approval-cycle changes. Do not attach sales growth to a logo refresh simply because both happened in the same quarter.

Copywriter Resume Examples: Show What the Words Helped Achieve

Copywriting samples become more informative when they explain the audience, desired action, research, and evidence behind the messaging.

Before:

Wrote high-converting landing pages and compelling emails.

After:

Rewrote a service landing page’s headline, benefits, and objection-handling sections; the variant recorded a 4.5% demo-request rate versus 3.6% for the control during an eight-week experiment.

Another example:

Developed a five-email onboarding sequence; unique clickers per delivered email increased from 2.8% to 3.4% against the previous sequence in a matched-period comparison.

Show representative copy, the customer problem, the hypothesis, and the evidence you used. Define whether a lead was merely submitted or qualified by sales.

Be careful with email open rates. Mailchimp explains that Apple Mail Privacy Protection can preload tracking pixels and distort reported opens. Use opens with appropriate caveats and consider clicks, qualified responses, or downstream actions when available. Mailchimp’s Apple privacy guidance

For editorial or SEO work, connect content to verified outcomes such as relevant organic traffic, qualified inquiries, or assisted conversions. Keep attribution language consistent with the report and avoid presenting all company traffic growth as your personal result.

Growth Marketer Resume Examples: Make the Economics Understandable

Growth marketing achievements should explain the part of the funnel you owned and the tradeoffs you considered.

Before:

Scaled campaigns and generated strong ROAS.

After:

Managed a six-week paid search program with $12,000 in ad spend and 4.0x platform-attributed purchase ROAS; coordinated landing-page experiments and reviewed search terms weekly.

Another example:

Reallocated spend across three acquisition campaigns; observed cost per sales-qualified lead fell from $150 to $120 while qualified lead volume rose from 80 to 100 across comparable six-week periods.

The second example describes a 20% reduction in cost per qualified lead. Its case study should define qualification, identify the source of truth, and discuss other changes between periods.

Pair acquisition efficiency with quality where you can. A lower lead cost is less informative if those leads rarely qualify or convert.

Keep channel reporting separate from blended business reporting. Do not sum platform-attributed sales across channels without checking whether multiple platforms claim the same transaction.

UX/UI Designer Resume Examples: Explain Decisions and Validation

UX/UI portfolios should make the problem, research, design decisions, collaboration, and validation visible. Screens alone do not explain why the design was appropriate.

Before:

Redesigned the app to improve user experience and retention.

After:

Redesigned account setup after observing recurring form errors; in a second moderated prototype study, seven of eight participants completed the target task unassisted, compared with four of eight in the earlier round.

Another example:

Designed and documented a reusable component library adopted across four product flows; partnered with engineering to resolve inconsistent form states before release.

The first example reports a study finding. It does not prove that production conversion or retention improved. Record differences in participants, tasks, facilitation, and prototypes before comparing rounds.

Nielsen Norman Group distinguishes qualitative research used to understand problems from quantitative studies used for measurement and benchmarking. A small exploratory test can supply useful findings without supporting population-wide improvement claims. NN/g on qualitative and quantitative usability testing

If your work shipped and reliable product analytics exist, include the relevant activation, task, or cohort measure. Explain what research, product, engineering, and data colleagues contributed.

Social Media Manager Resume Examples: Go Beyond Follower Counts

Social media work can support awareness, community service, traffic, lead generation, and customer relationships. Select evidence that matches the objective.

Before:

Grew followers and created engaging content.

After:

Planned and published a 12-post organic education series; engagement rate by impressions reached 2.6% versus 2.0% for the previous comparable series, with saves and shares included in the calculation.

Another example:

Introduced response templates and an escalation guide for two social channels; median first-response time during staffed hours fell from six hours to two over an eight-week rollout.

Show the content, publishing rationale, moderation approach, and reporting definitions. Separate organic results from boosted or paid content.

Follower growth can provide useful context, but explain audience relevance and what happened next. A smaller audience producing qualified inquiries may be more relevant to the target role than a large following with little relevant activity.

Build Portfolio Case Studies That Support Your Claims

A strong case study connects the brief, your decisions, the work, and the evidence. Give a hiring reader enough context to understand both the result and its limits.

Use this structure:

  1. Context: The audience, product, channel, and problem.
  2. Objective: The action or outcome the work was intended to support.
  3. Your role: What you owned, supported, or handed over.
  4. Approach: Research, constraints, alternatives, and decisions.
  5. Work samples: Relevant visuals, copy, flows, or campaign assets.
  6. Measurement: Metric definition, baseline, period, comparison, and reporting source.
  7. Outcome and learning: What happened, how confidently it can be interpreted, and what you would change.

Keep a private evidence record for your own preparation: approved reports, test summaries, dates, calculation notes, and your contribution. Publish only what you have permission to share.

When client data is confidential

Ask what can be disclosed. Depending on permission, you may use a client-approved anonymized case, permitted ranges, or a process-focused explanation without results.

Do not assume a password makes confidential information safe to share. Do not publish dashboards containing personal data, unpublished business information, or access credentials.

If results cannot be shared, describe the scope, deliverables, decisions, and approved qualitative feedback. If you have no access to results, say that rather than estimating a persuasive number.

When the work is personal, academic, or speculative

Label it clearly. Explain your hypothesis, process, and any research or testing you actually completed.

Use wording such as “proposed,” “prototyped,” or “tested with participants.” A speculative redesign does not have commercial ROAS, production retention, or real sales uplift unless it was implemented and measured.

The Pretty Canva Resume Trap: What Actually Causes ATS Problems?

The risk comes from document structure and export choices, rather than the Canva name. A resume with columns, separate text boxes, decorative graphics, or image-based text can be difficult for a parser to interpret, even when it looks clear to a person.

Greenhouse identifies columned layouts, graphics, image uploads, complex tables, and contact information placed in headers, footers, or text boxes as possible causes of incomplete or unsuccessful parsing. It also explains that a failed parse can leave the resume attached while requiring manual field correction. Parsing failure is not the same as automatic rejection. Greenhouse’s resume-parsing guidance

An ATS-friendly creative resume can still use careful typography, whitespace, and restrained color. The text should remain complete and understandable when those visual details disappear.

Avoid resume formatting that can interfere with parsing

Screenshots of portfolio workFile size and visual complexity increaseLink to the case study and summarize the evidence

Do not move essential qualifications into a portfolio graphic and expect the application system to recover them. Include relevant skills, tools, and experience in the resume itself.

How to Make a Creative Resume ATS-Friendly

Start with the employer’s instructions. Then use a structure that keeps your experience easy to follow:

  • Name and contact details, including a readable portfolio URL.
  • A short, targeted summary when it adds useful context.
  • Relevant skills and tools.
  • Work experience in reverse chronological order.
  • Selected projects when they add evidence not already covered.
  • Education and relevant credentials.

Use familiar headings such as Work Experience, Projects, Skills, and Education. Keep dates next to the roles they describe. Replace unusual section titles such as “My Journey” with labels that make the content obvious.

List tools you actually use, such as Figma, Adobe Illustrator, Canva, Google Ads, Google Analytics, or a content management system. Connect important tools to examples rather than presenting an undifferentiated software list.

Keep the facts consistent across versions

If an employer requests a designed presentation or portfolio PDF, provide it in the appropriate field. You can maintain a separate application resume with simpler structure.

Keep titles, dates, metrics, and contributions consistent across your resume, portfolio, and LinkedIn profile. Adapt emphasis to the role, but preserve the underlying facts.

PDF or DOCX?

Submit the format the employer requests. If both are accepted, use a straightforward DOCX or text-based PDF and check the result after export.

A PDF extension does not prove that the file contains readable text. A DOCX extension does not guarantee that a complex layout will parse correctly either.

Avoid claims that a particular format, template, or third-party score guarantees acceptance. Employers configure their systems and review processes differently.

Check Your Resume Before You Apply

Use this practical review:

  1. Open the exported file. Check line breaks, dates, symbols, and links.
  2. Select and copy the text. Paste it into a plain-text editor and inspect the reading order. This is a useful diagnostic, not a complete ATS test.
  3. Check the portfolio. Open each link while signed out and review the phone layout.
  4. Check every metric. Confirm its definition, calculation, timeframe, source, and your contribution.
  5. Review the application fields. Correct any information extracted inaccurately from your upload.

For a wider explanation of parsing and screening, read our guide to ATS resume rejection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Canva resumes automatically rejected by ATS?

No. Canva is not an automatic rejection category. Columns, independent text boxes, graphics, and image-based text can make a document harder to parse. Use a simple structure, check the exported text, follow file instructions, and review any fields populated by the application system.

Put a visible portfolio URL near your contact details in the main document body. Add a small number of relevant case-study links near selected projects if useful. Keep important titles and achievement wording readable without hyperlinks, and complete any dedicated portfolio field in the application.

What metrics should a graphic designer put on a resume?

Choose evidence appropriate to the project: creative test results, production time, revision cycles, template adoption, or rollout scope. Use conversion or revenue figures only when you have reliable data and can explain your contribution. Brand work can be supported by process and delivery evidence.

How should I write ROAS on a marketing resume?

State achieved ROAS with the reporting period, channel, spend, and conversion-value definition where practical. For example, describe platform-attributed purchase ROAS rather than implying verified profit. Keep the attribution context in your case study and distinguish achieved ROAS from a bidding target.

What is the difference between percentage lift and percentage points?

A change from 4% to 5% is an increase of 1 percentage point and a relative lift of 25%. Percentage points describe the absolute difference between rates; relative lift divides that difference by the original rate. Include the baseline and final rate to make your claim clear.

What if I cannot share client results?

Follow the client’s confidentiality requirements and obtain permission for any case study. Use approved anonymization or ranges only when allowed. Otherwise explain your role, process, deliverables, and permitted feedback. Do not invent performance figures or assume a password permits disclosure.

Can a UX prototype demonstrate conversion or retention improvement?

A prototype can demonstrate design decisions and research findings, including observed task completion in a defined study. It does not establish production conversion or retention improvement. Reserve those claims for implemented work with appropriate analytics and explain the comparison method and limitations.

Should social media managers put engagement rate or follower growth first?

Lead with the measure that best matches the role and campaign objective. Engagement rate needs a clear denominator and interaction definition. Follower growth needs audience context. Where available, connect either measure to relevant traffic, qualified inquiries, community service, or another meaningful outcome.

Your Next Step: Connect One Sample to One Supported Result

Choose a job advertisement and one relevant project. Write down the problem, what you personally contributed, the evidence available, and the case study that explains it.

Then draft a resume bullet that remains useful even if the reader never clicks the link. Check that the number is accurate, the comparison is fair, and the language matches the strength of the evidence.

Your portfolio gives the work room to be seen. A clear resume gives the reader a reason to look more closely.
